|
|
|
In celebration of the addition of RL's most recent Moisture Farmer (Jacen Deneb/Owen Lars), I thought I'd add a little inspiration for those considering similar costumes.
Perhaps one day we'll have enough of these to form a 'Farmers Guild' detachment!!
A Tatooine style costume is a good choice for droid operators or when you want something more comfortable to hang out in at cons. Its a nice contrast to all the other SW costumes, which almost always fall into the Imperial, Rebel, Bounty Hunter, or Smuggler categories. In fact, you don't even have to worry about having a weapon (although I do recommend keeping a droid caller or some tools handy)
I'd encourage anyone doing one of these to be creative and come up with your own outfit, but as a starting point I've gathered some pics of the extras from Episode 4.

There's a lot of stuff in there that you probably didn't notice before, no matter how many times you've seen ANH.
And here's pics of some of the galaxy's better-known Tatooing residents:

One thing I like to stress is weathering- if you are going to look like you are from Tatooine, a dusting of sand on your clothing is essential.

Mark,
Thanks for the very nice reference galleries! I'm glad you got the one of Bonnie as Beru with the sun umbrella, I had that one, but it was on our old computer which has since died and I thought I wouldn't be able to find it again. I'll be sure to pass along any images I find that you might not have.
And, congrats to my hubby (Jason/Jacen/Owen) for being the newest moister farmer on the block! _________________ ~Mieal

I love the idea of the Farmers Guild! I'd like to make one of these. I'll have to start looking for fabric.
And you are so correct about the weather, Mark. I'll make mine and then go to Myrtle Beach and roll around in the sand. _________________

There are some great shortcuts for making the beginnings of a farmer outfit- one is using Karate Gi (shirt). You'll have to make a few modifications such as removing several lines of stitching from the edge and dying it the proper color (make sure you buy an all-cotton gi!)
Thanks for all the picture contributions Rachel!!

That's good to know Mark. I guess tea dying the fabric would be a good way to get it deserty looking. I did that for my Tusken. Well, I used tea, coffee, cinnamon sticks, paprika and mustard . . . I'm sloppy. _________________

For Tatooine, sloppy is GOOD!! I've been reworking some parts of my Tusken this week- I love the messy stuff.

I like using coffee as a dye. I did that for an "Old Ben" costume I made for my son Ben when he was a baby. It came out nicely, because it wasn't all uniform but splotchy like dirt would be, with a nice "earthy" brown I was hoping for.
Glad to help with the pictures, Mark. If I find more, I'll send them your way. _________________ ~Mieal

*is inspired*
This looks very do-able.
I'm thinking that I can put something together, leave it in the desert for that "worn" look, and then see what happens.
Gotta love it when you live in real-life Tattooine... well... Phoenix... |

Yay! It would be good to have you join my brother.
I've got a pattern and fabric. Just need to make time to make this. _________________

Then we will expect some great photos of you in the desert!
If I lived in Phoenix, I would have SO built a vaporator by now!!

Hmmm, I wonder if they had swamp coolers (evap coolers) on Tatooine. _________________

First, you have to harvest the water to fill them with.
I'd say no, since all that hard work would just go back into the atmosphere again unless you could recapture it and reuse it. _________________

I am interested in this costume as well. I kind of got an idea for the look that I want. Going to add a droid caller, some tools and a holdout blaster. _________________ Louie the Bantha Whisperer...

I'm working on the Tattooine look for me to go with my Watto puppet. I'm thinking of using Twi-lek headtails and farmer style clothes to be "sidekick" to Watto's antics.
Yes, I am making a Watto puppet.
Pretty much anything rough and brownish works. We found some fabrics that look rough and heavy but aren't. By layering, it comes together nicely.
Watto, "Gutan Anolia!"
Me, "Ay Wano Wonga!" _________________ While tracking the last pure-blood Mando
