Tamaqua High School: Mini-THON 2013

Original Report by: Ryan Miorelli,  Echo Base Somewhere northeast of Anchorhead in the little-known coal-mining region of Tatooine colloquially known as Northeast Pennsylvania, you’ll find Tamaqua High School, Luke Skywalker’s alma mater. While as a teenager he often lamented that “if there’s a bright center to the universe, this is the high school that it’s farthest from,” this farmboy was pretty excited to return as a Jedi Knight for the school’s second-annual Mini-THON, an event inspired by Penn State University’s THON event [which Echo Base and Garrison Carida also trooped!]. The Mini-THON’s goal was to raise funds for Camp Can-Do, a camp for pediatric cancer patients. The event was hosted by Tamaqua Area Student Government Association, or TASGA, advised by Stephen Ulicny, my former football coach and economics teacher. My mother, the school nurse at Tamaqua, was telling him about the Legion and he was slightly apprehensive but enthusiastic. He admitted to me that he was “worried it would be, like, a guy in a stormtrooper Halloween mask, until I saw your trading cards.” Did we deliver? You bet! Jonas and Ryan and I arrived at 4 PM and went to our very spacious changing area, the nurse’s office. Let’s just say I know people. The fridge was literally packed with cold water for our troopers. We set up a shared extra-long table display (thanks Mav Oya’la for the banner stand! Told ya you could’ve taken the top spot!), suited up, and headed out to troop. We spent the next three hours mingling with the crowd, getting some awesome photo-ops in a very Yavin IV-esque courtyard amphitheater I always loved as a student. As we were moving about the event greeting kids and kids-at-heart, Tim and John manned our table. A band was playing in the gym who stopped their set for a few minutes to get their picture with us…good job to our TKs and Merc for getting up on that stage in armor! After the event (from which we may have gained a recruit or two…stay tuned) we all packed up, John and Nick headed home, but the rest of us went to Sister’s Cantina for food, fun, and a debate about whether or not gratuity had been included on our check. Afterwards, everyone left the Tamaqua System in the Outer Rim for their respective homes, and I bought a saber and blaster rifle from Tim (out of the back of a car in the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant on the edge of town, mind you, because we’re always classy). Thanks to all for coming out! The Force was truly with my tiny hometown thanks...

Fundraiser for Nate

Original report by: Crystal von Oy, Alpha Base On Saturday February 23rd members of Alpha Base and Garrison Titan gathered to help one of their own members, Darthspike, who’s son, Nate, is prone to epileptic seizures, which have the potential to be life threatening. The event was a fundraiser to help them obtain a seizure assist dog for Nate. Here is a story about Nate in our local paper that ran in early February 2013 [click here] The fundraiser drew many people with a bake sale, raffle, a big bouncy house castle and slide. There was also a photo booth where people could have their photo taken with the Star Wars characters as well as an informal blast-a-trooper, where even an Ewok got into the fun! Together with the bake sale, raffle, our photo booth and blast-a-trooper, we helped raise almost $2500, in less than 3 hours!! This is a quote from Darthspike himself: “A big warm thank you again to everyone that attended! The troop was a huge success and I am happy to say that we raised the remaining money needed for Nate and also raised extra money to donate to the twin boys from Seattle who are in need of a dog too! Granting a Wish for Mitchell

Origianal report by: Dark Radiance, Rogue Base On January 7, 2013 at 9:10 AM, the monthly assembly for Oak Hollow Elementary in Draper, Utah was the location of where the Knights sent from the Jedi Council would meet Mitchell and discover if he had completed his trials successfully. The following is what transpired: The landing party consisted of Jedi Master Kleb Galron (Jakob Tice), Jedi Knights Jarren Maddox (Dave LaTomme) and Kaleb Flynn (Adam d’Hulst), X-Wing Pilot Tianili “Wraith” Jinn (Jill Hatch) and protocol droid C-3PO (Shawn Gordon). Also in attendance (incognito) was Spotter/Photographer Shane Gordon who recorded everything. When the party arrived, things were not going well. They were supposed to rendez-vous with Princess Leia (Elizabeth Boggess-Hales) and the Ambassadors from Make-A-Wish, but they were missing. They decided to enlist the services of bounty hunter Jango Fett (Mike Handy) to locate the Ambassadors as they searched for Leia. She soon arrived being pursued by a Snowtrooper from the Empire (Cameron John). With the help of the Padawan students of Oak Hollow, the Jedi were able to use a Mind Trick to get the trooper to leave without anyone getting harmed. Leia then revealed that the reason she was late was that the medal she had brought for the new Jedi had been stolen by Darth Vader (Brady Hales). The Sith Lord arrived, medal in hand, to crash the party and invite the young Padawans to join the Dark Side instead. The Jedi asked the students to choose who they supported, and the Light Side prevailed. With the help of the Vice Principal, Vader was convinced to do the right thing by returning the medal to Leia and apologizing to her. C-3PO then came forward and gave his report of the trials that had been completed. Mitchell had proven his skills in organization, concentration and focus, physical prowess, and sacrifice. Impressed by Mitchell’s progress in only a month’s time, the Jedi invited him to come forward and invited him to be knighted on the spot. Mitchell accepted, and with his family and school watching on, was given the rank of Jedi Knight. He was given the medal and presented with his first training lightsaber. Jango Fett finally arrived with the Ambassadors from Make-a-Wish (though he originally brought Chewbecca the Wookiee [Dartanian Richards], mistaking him for whom the Jedi were looking for). The Ambassadors arrived to present Mitchell with his first mission as a Jedi Knight: Go to Disney World and have a good time. The members of Rogue Base and the Alpine Garrison presented the Harline family with a signed copy of the script and posed for photographs for...
